The painting was inspired by a visit to the Karen Tribe in Northern Thailand.  Their women wear neck rings since their childhood, the purpose of which is protection, also beauty. However, healthwise, these heavy coils can compress the rib cage, reduce neck muscle strength, and may cause pain or discomfort when worn or removed after many years. It does make me wonder how much people are willing to sacrifice their bodies and comfort to belong, be accepted, or feel beautiful.
